Transforming an IKEA KURA Bed for a Big Girl!
I vividly remember putting this room together four years ago for the little girl still in my womb. I had closed down my leather goods shop and moved my sewing tools to our backyard shed. In times like these, you can only dream with a limited imagination of who will occupy such a special place. Over the past four years, that nursery has evolved and been filled with personalized touches as our daughter has grown.
Designing a nursery is fun but designing and putting together a "big girl room” has been even more magical for me as a Mom. Each little decision feels personal and intentional because now I actually know her personality and the things she loves!
I knew I wanted to do a loft-style bed because of the small space we have and she will eventually share this room with her little brother. The IKEA KURA bed is the perfect fit: not too tall, customizable, and affordable. I scoured Pinterest for hours looking at different KURA bed hacks and there are so many inspiring projects! I hadn’t seen many upholstered options so I was excited to see if my idea would actually work.
For the mattress, I sourced this from Newton because this is the same mattress we had for Willow’s crib. We love how it is breathable and completely washable which is absolutely necessary during childhood!
I found these curtains for the bottom and hemmed them to fit in the space. To hang them, I used an inexpensive tension rod and these curtain rod holders.
The bedding is from Zara and the quilt is from Quince. My mom helped me embroider some fabric to create this scalloped pillow. The beautiful dollhouse fits perfectly underneath the loft!
I love how this space turned out and I hope it inspires you in your own space!
