Our West Elm Harmony Sofa: A review after four years
A sofa is one of those pieces in our homes that can feel like just a necessity but when you think about it, it is so much more. It is the place where we crash after a long day of work. It is where we hold our baby days after birth. It is where acquaintances become friends. It is where many mid-day naps occur. It is where we cuddle up and stay warm in the cold months. It is a centerpiece of our lives, often! This is why investing in this type of piece can be overwhelming.
When I was couch shopping years ago, I would look for in-depth reviews and honest experiences because I knew this would be an investment in our home for years to come.
I wrote this review years ago and try to update it often to reference how our couch is holding up in case you are in the market! After four years, I still love our sofa and highly recommend it! There are cheaper alternatives these days but I will say you usually get what you pay for. For something we use so often, Iām grateful we saved for the Harmony Sofa. West Elm often has sales, so keep an eye out for when it goes on sale!
What Sofa Did You Get?
The exact sofa we have is the Harmony Extra Deep 82" Yarn Dyed Linen in Stone White. The first thing to know is I love a deep sofa. When ordering in the store, they triple-checked that I wanted the extra deep option. It is very deep (47"), and I love that because it is for lounging, living, and a kick-off-your-shoes-and-curl-up-with-a-book-type home. When we have friends over, I offer them extra pillows to put behind them if they aren't as comfortable settling in at first. My favorite thing is when a friend leans back onto the giant couch with a cup of tea and stays for a while to chat. That is why I love a deep couch: it invites. So if that isn't your vibe or you are limited in space, I recommend getting the standard depth (41") because it is still deeper than most!
They now offer a bench cushion option which I wish was available when we ordered ours! I love the look of one long
Deciding On a White Sofa
A white sofa is a risky decision for most. We decided we would take the risk only if we were willing to stain treat it immediately and take the extra time to care for it. We used seven cans of Scotch Guard the day it arrived to cover every inch of the couch and it has made a huge difference! You can also check in your area for professionals to come in and treat your couch. This usually comes with a warranty and is a better option if you don't want to use Scotch Guard.
We also felt comfortable taking the risk of white because of the removable cushion covers and choosing a linen fabric. This is not recommended according to the sofa tags but after four years, we have not had an issue with washing the covers. We only wash them about twice a year to make sure the fabric stays in great condition.
The linen fabric we chose is also forgiving. It is great because it is breathable and won't trap stains like other fabrics.
There is natural piling that happens exactly like your favorite sweater. That's when I use a sweater shaver and the piling is gone in seconds.
Comfort
This sofa is so comfortable. The depth makes it as big as a twin-size mattress and is perfect if you have guests. The filling is not too soft and not too firm. Over time it has settled into the ideal comfort level - which I can attest to from spending countless hours on this couch postpartum.
Go to your local West Elm and see what I mean.
Last Thoughts
If white isn't for you, they have so many color and fabric options! I believe you should have the mindset for any piece of furniture that you want to last for a while that it will take care and attention to keep it in good condition. I also love that there are so many slipcover options these days where you can have slipcovers made to fit your sofa. This is a fun way to switch things up from season to season!
This is a larger couch and even at first I was shocked at how much bigger it felt in our space. Over time I got used to it but this is something to note and make sure you double check the measurements for your space.
I think the quality and craftsmanship of the Harmony Sofa is completely worth the investment and has been a wonderful addition to our home!
